We announce the birth of a new project. Nine friends, already more or less involved in winemaking, have bonded together to make wines from amazing old vines in ancient Catalunya.
We are working in a remarkable grape-growing region: Maury in the Roussillon, midway between Priorat and the northern Rhone and forty miles inland from Collioure. The vineyards are planted in broken schistand decomposed granite. The conditions are so harsh that not much else grows in the vineyards; even weeds are scarce.
The vines were first planted during the Carthaginian invasions of Europe and have been farmed without cease since then for nearly a hundred generations. A hundred generations of care and pride have preserved the vineyards impeccably, but the last generation has seen the market for their grapes disappear.
Our team is bringing the fruit of these priceless vineyards to new markets.
We began making wine here in 2005 and are now ready to release the first samples of our efforts: We have five single vineyard red wines from 2007 and a single vineyard white also from 2007. The quantities are so miniscule that our efforts might seem ridiculous-- 20 cases each for four of the single vineyard reds. But those 20 cases are the sole and complete produce of these incomparable vineyards for a single year. The wines are good-- very good. What makes us most proud is not that they please, but that these bottles luminously transports these remarkable ancient vineyards to our shores, to our tables.
We are just beginning to sell these wines. We will be happy to let you know when and how you may purchase them.
